2014/15 session 2015-04-21 seminar

The Applied Biostatistics Association (TABA) invites you to a seminar and dinner:

Topic: Maternal and Child Health Gains in Afghanistan in the Post-Taliban Era: A Synthesis of Big Data

Presenter: Nadia Akseer, MSc, PhD Candidate, Centre for Global Child Health, Hospital for Sick Children

Abstract: Following the 2001 US-invasion of Afghanistan and the fall of the Taliban, Afghanistan has experienced a tumultuous period of democracy overshadowed by conflict, insurgency and inflow of development assistance. To date, little systematic evidence has been available on health gains for the most vulnerable populations – women and children – over that time. We undertook a comprehensive, systematic assessment of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health in Afghanistan over the last decade. Primary data on population health, nutrition, immunization, and household assets were obtained from 11 nationally representative complex surveys conducted between 2003 and 2013. Health system performance, human resources data, and insecurity and conflict were obtained from the Afghan Ministry of Health and third party surveys. Telecommunications, education statistics and other province-level information was obtained from respective ministry databases. We estimated national/subnational time trends for key reproductive, maternal and child health indicators, and linear regression methods were used to determine predictors of change in health care service utilization. Analyses were weighted for sampling and design effects. We encountered several challenges when synthesizing and merging datasets to present a coherent picture. Key results of the analysis? TBA!
