Abstract: Directional statistics, circular data analysis and spherical data analysis involve the analysis of angular data. Variables that are not angles but that are cyclical or seasonal in nature, such as some time measurements (e.g., arrival times at an intensive care unit, or times of disease onset during the calendar year) and measurements arising from multiples of a fundamental unit (quantum), are sometimes best analysed by being transformed into angles. The angular and cyclic nature of this form of data has wide-ranging repercussions for the plotting of data, hypothesis testing, and model fitting. Some of the concepts and methods of directional statistics or circular data analysis will be motivated and illustrated by applications in the health sciences.
