2010/11 session 2011-05-05 seminar

The Applied Biostatistics Association (TABA) invites you to a seminar and dinner:

Speaker: Hong Chen, McDougall Scientific Ltd.
Topic: Simulation as a Problem-Solving Tool

Abstract
Simulation has been widely used in statistical research, particularly in the study of statistical properties, and the development and evaluation of statistical methods. Often, complex mathematical and statistical concepts can be more easily explained through simulations without involving formula, theorem and extensive proofs.  These advantages have made simulation a powerful tool in solving practical problems in our day-to-day statistical work.
This presentation will discuss the general approach to statistical simulations, and illustrate how simulations can be applied to provide insights into, and solutions for, practical problems in statistical practice and statistical consulting.  The examples to be discussed are based on real issues encountered while providing statistical support to clinical trials – sample size and power determination, predicting the timing of trial events, and trial monitoring and decision making under an adaptive design framework.
