2009/10 session 2009-11-25 seminar

The Applied Biostatistics Association, TABA,  invites you to a seminar and dinner…

Topic: Semiparametric Mixed Model: A Best of Both Worlds Approach

Speaker: Heather Krause, York University

Abstract:  The presentation will provide a brief overview of modern nonparametric techniques and a summary of current linear mixed model theory.  The focus of the presentation will be the fusion of these two techniques resulting in semiparametric mixed models.  This type of model is quite valuable in the analysis of complex data that may be related in unusual ways.  It is a modular approach that can be adapted to address the unique situation presented by each data set.  We will look at several recent examples of applications and developments in a wide range of fields – including an examination of spinal bone mineral density in women, factors influencing the use of the death penalty in Britain and the effect of air quality on the growth of spruce trees.  As much as possible, we will present the implementation of this type of model in both R and SAS, from identifying the type of data that would respond well, to developing code that works, to generating graphs that aid in the interpretation of the outcomes of the semiparametric mixed model.
